On February 3, DUT hosted a unique orientation program specifically tailored for international students from its global partner universities. This event, held alongside the orientation for first-year students, aimed to create a seamless transition for these students into their new academic environment.
Imagine the excitement and curiosity of students from countries like Germany, France, and China, stepping into a new world of academic exploration! DUT's orientation program is designed to address their unique needs and ensure they feel right at home.
Through engaging and informative sessions, students are introduced to a wealth of resources and support systems. From campus clinics and sports facilities to protection services and well-being programs, every aspect of their academic journey is considered. It's like a one-stop shop for all their needs!
But here's where it gets controversial... Dr. Lavern Samuels, the Director of International Education and Partnership, emphasizes that all students, regardless of their background, are treated equally. They understand that international students may need that extra helping hand to navigate an unfamiliar environment, just like local students from other provinces.
"The challenge of finding the campus is universal," Dr. Samuels explains. "We provide clear directions and ongoing assistance to ensure everyone feels welcomed and supported."
And this is the part most people miss... DUT goes the extra mile to ensure a smooth arrival for international students. For those traveling by air or road, they offer various transport options and even individual assistance when needed. Carol Newman from Dr. Samuels' office is often on hand to guide students personally, ensuring no one gets lost in the shuffle.
Wahab Kayondo, an international student from Germany, shares his experience of learning about the student exchange program with DUT. "Last year, we hosted students from Durban, and it was a great opportunity to learn about their academic culture. We then shared our experiences, and the exchange program was born!"
Kayondo further highlights the initial challenge of navigating the vast DUT campus. "Finding our way to Block D as international students was an adventure in itself! But with a little perseverance and a good workout climbing those seven flights of stairs, we made it."
Nisa Akyol, another excited participant, shares her enthusiasm for the program. "I'm thrilled to be part of this exchange! It's my first time abroad, and I'm eager to experience the hot weather, meet new people, and immerse myself in the DUT academic environment."
During the orientation for South African students, a similar focus on campus facilities and support programs was emphasized. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Thandwa Zizwe Mthembu, welcomed students with valuable guidance on student life. He encouraged them to embrace diversity, explore new ideas, and engage with others, emphasizing the importance of open-mindedness and respect.
"As you navigate your academic journey, remember to hold onto your values and principles. They are the foundation of your growth, not only academically but also socially and as global citizens," Professor Mthembu added.
