Mariners Sign Reliever Brendan White to Minor League Deal

In a notable move for depth, the Seattle Mariners have agreed to a minor league contract with reliever Brendan White, who most recently pitched in independent baseball, per an announcement from the Atlantic League’s Lancaster Stormers. White completed the 2025 season with the Stormers after being released from a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers in July.
White, 27, carries previous major league experience with Detroit, appearing in 33 games and throwing 40 2/3 innings with a 5.09 ERA as a rookie in 2023. He was efficient from the mound, striking out about a quarter of the batters he faced, while posting a league-average walk rate around 8.5%. His fastball sat in the 94-95 mph range, supported by a mid-80s breaking ball that he leaned on in roughly two-thirds of his appearances.
A strain of adversity followed, as White spent most of the 2024 season sidelined by an injury. Detroit opted not to tender him a contract at the end of the year but later re-signed him to a minor league deal. His 2025 return to form hit a rough patch at Triple-A Toledo, where his strikeout rate dipped to about 17% and opponents posted more than seven earned runs per nine innings.
White’s performance remained unstable after his transition to the Stormers, where he surrendered six runs and issued ten free passes (six walks and four hit-by-pitches) over 9 2/3 innings. Despite the difficult stretch, this move signals a fresh start as he attempts to reestablish himself within an MLB organization.
With this agreement, White will likely begin the season at Triple-A Tacoma, seeking to prove he can regain his form and contribute depth to Seattle’s pitching staff.
Would you agree that White’s track record warrants giving him another shot with the Mariners, or do you think teams should prioritize younger prospects at this stage? Share your thoughts in the comments.
