A heart-wrenching defeat for Canada in the Olympic hockey final has sparked a fiery debate, with coach Jon Cooper pointing the finger at the 'TV-driven' overtime rules.
The Olympics, unlike other prestigious tournaments like the 4 Nations Face-Off and the Stanley Cup Playoffs, employ a unique three-on-three overtime format. This rule change, designed to expedite games and reduce shootouts, has become a controversial topic in the hockey world.
"You take four players off the ice, and suddenly hockey isn't hockey anymore," Cooper stated. "Overtime and shootouts exist for a reason - it's all about TV and ending games quickly. That's why you don't see it in the Stanley Cup final or playoffs."
Canada's loss to the US in Milan on Sunday was a bitter pill to swallow. The Canadians had dominated much of the final two periods, but it was the US who struck gold with a goal from Jack Hughes just over a minute into the 3-on-3 overtime.
"It's a different game," Cooper added. "With fewer players on the ice, the dynamics change completely. It's a shame that a game as beautiful as hockey can be reduced to this."
But here's where it gets controversial: Canada had multiple chances to end the game in regulation time. They only managed one goal, and US goalie Connor Hellebuyck, the reigning NHL MVP, stood tall with an incredible 41 saves.
The US team's victory marked their first gold medal since the iconic 1980 'Miracle on Ice.' Hellebuyck and the Hughes brothers, Jack and Quinn, were instrumental in this triumph. Quinn, in particular, led all American players with eight points, the most of any defenseman in the tournament.
